The Sperry Story

1935

Paul Sperry falls overboard and then inspired by his cocker spaniel's footpads, he creates the world's first non-slip deck shoe.

1939

Sperry patents his non-slip sole and offers it to the U.S. Rubber Company of CT. They turn him down because it would make shoes too expensive.

1940

The United States War Department names Sperry Top-Sider as one of the official shoes of the Navy.

1946

New Sperry styles are launched, and their usage expands from the sea to everyday leisure, tennis, and industrial wear.

1960s

Icons like JFK, Mr. Rogers, and Paul Newman popularize everyday wear.

1980

Lisa Birnbach names Sperrys an icon of prep style under section “Dressing the Part.”

1987

Sperry becomes the official footwear sponsor of America's Cup and the U.S. Olympic sailing team.

1994

Partnered with New Balance for first major collaboration to create a high-performance, athletically-styled boat shoe — the SB770.

2011

The Gold Cup Collection drops featuring premium, luxury materials and revolutionary anti-shock and vibration (ASV) technology.

2012

Launched most advanced performance technology to date, The GripX3™ adaptive wave siping, for the U.S. Sailing Team in the 2012 Olympics.

2016

Sport-focused 7 SEAS Collection launched after experiencing training first-hand for America's Cup. Now part of the multisport Sperry Sport Collection.

2019

Sperry creates BIONIC Collection with sustainable materials and launches coinciding campaign Look Good, Do Good for advocacy and education. Now known as the SeaCycled™ Collection.

2020

PLUSHWAVE™ technology is launched for ultra-cushioning and ultra-lightweight comfort.

2022

Today we raise our sails to our next adventure. Born on the water, we have evolved to walk on paths and pavement to one-ways and runways.

Circular Vamp Oxford

The CVO becomes the world's first non-slip deck shoe made with quick-drying cotton. In 1940, it became the official footwear for the casual uniform of the United States Navy.

Top-Sider

Following the CVO's design, Sperry creates a leather version. Today, the Top-Sider is known as the Authentic Original Boat Shoe and is our most popular silhouette.

Captain's Oxford

The first casual shoe designed specifically for Captains. This style flaunts a higher profile and thicker sole for a more sophisticated look.
